VFS is a non-profit, charitable educational and technical organization. Since it was founded as the American Helicopter Society (AHS) in 1943 \u2014 just as the first US helicopter was being put into service \u2014 the Society has been the primary forum for interchange of information on vertical flight technology. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/who-we-are\/about-ahs\/ahs-bylaws\">Society Bylaws<\/a>, the purpose of the Society is to &#8220;advance the theory and practices of the science of vertical flight aircraft.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In November 2022, the VFS Board of Directors approved updates to the VFS Vision and Mission Statements, as well as a statement of the Goals &amp; Supporting Initiatives underway by the Society:<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/download.cfm?downloadfile=66D972F9-CC4E-D8A7-FF11A990CE486FE1&amp;typename=dmFile&amp;fieldname=filename\">2022 VFS Strategic Statements (pdf)<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Vision<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><em>An inclusive and diverse international organization that advocates, promotes and<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>supports vertical flight technology, policies and professional development.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Mission<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><em>Provide opportunity for technical data exchange and dissemination; promote awareness of vertical flight capabilities, challenges and development; engage in community outreach and advocate for public policy consistent with the goals of the Society; leverage the technical base to explore innovation; and foster a diverse and inclusive environment that promotes careers and professional advancement in vertical flight<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Each year, the Society organizes or co-sponsors several regional and international\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/events\">conferences, symposia and workshops<\/a>\u00a0that facilitate the advancement of the theory and practices of helicopter and other VTOL aircraft technology, and publishes their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/publications\/proceedings\">proceedings<\/a>. The Society publishes the premier vertical flight technology bi-monthly magazine,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/publications\/vertiflite-magazine\">Vertiflite<\/a><\/em>, as well as the world\u2019s only peer-reviewed vertical flight technical publication,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/publications\/journal-of-ahs\">The Journal of the AHS<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(JAHS). The Society\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/what-we-do\/advocacy\">advocates<\/a>\u00a0on behalf of rotorcraft technology to the public and to government bodies, awards some two dozen annual engineering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/education\/vertical-flight-foundation-scholarships\">scholarships<\/a>,\u00a0and sponsors an annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/education\/student-design-competition\">student design competition<\/a>\u00a0and other challenges for undergraduate and graduate student teams. In addition, it presents two dozen annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/awards-and-contests\/ahs-international-awards\">awards<\/a>\u00a0to members of the vertical flight technical community for scientific and technical accomplishments, inspiring rescues and promoting the goals of the Society.<\/p>\n<p>The Vertical Flight Society \u2014 formally, the American Helicopter Society (AHS) International, Incorporated \u2014 is the world\u2019s premier professional vertical flight technical society. Since its inception in 1943, the Society has provided an international forum through which to expand the body of knowledge of vertical flight.
